Professor Trouvé being interviewed at the 33rd International Symposium on Combustion in Beijing on future challenges for combustion and fire research.

Profs. Quintiere, Marshall and Trouvé just returned from the 33rd International Symposium on Combustion that took place on August 1-6 in Beijing, China (http://www.combustion2010.org). The International Symposium on Combustion is the premier scientific meeting in combustion science and is a prestigious biennial event that is drawing together more than 1200 combustion researchers from academia, government laboratories, private corporations and funding agencies. The International Symposium on Combustion is organized into twelve Research Colloquia ranging from reaction kinetics to supersonic combustion, and including fire. At the Beijing Symposium, Prof. Trouvé acted as Co-Chair and Coordinator of the Fire Research Colloquium. Prof. Trouvé is also a Member of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the Symposium.

Twenty-eight papers submitted to the 33rd International Symposium on Combustion were accepted for presentation in the Fire Research Colloquium. Profs. Quintiere, Marshall and Trouvé gave three of these twenty-eight presentations, thereby sharing with their international colleagues recent progress made at the University of Maryland on research topics such as candle flame shape (Quintiere), sprinkler spray characterization (Marshall) and diffusion flame extinction (Trouvé).

“The International Symposium on Combustion is a landmark event for combustion research,” says Trouvé. “Coming back from China, we are now looking forward to having our own big event at home next year.” The Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland will be hosting the 10th International Symposium of the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) on June 19-24, 2011. The IAFSS Symposium is the premier scientific meeting in fire science and is a prestigious triennial event (for more information, visit http://www.iafss.org/ and http://www.iafss.org/html/Maryland/marylandhome.htm).
